I have been a member of the ShawnBlanc site for just over 2 years now and really enjoyed the podcast that comes along with it. A couple of years ago he went through the outline for “the power of a focus life” book which then became “the focus course” and I found it incredibly valuable. However, last week he had Colbert Bar of Fizzle.co on and they discussed hustle, margin and starting a business.
One of the points he made that I found incredibly interesting was where he mentioned the ideas of less thinking, more doing.
Less thinking, More doing
As he explained it, often people say they are working on something, but really they are stuck thinking about it and planning. But action is really what moves the needle forward. I can attest to this, for the last couple of years I’ve tried to “push” something forward on the side of my regular job. Often times I have claimed to be working on it, but really I spent more time planning or fiddling on widgets than doing things that pushed the project forward.
I think it is very dangerous when it comes to blogging as many things can be claimed to help push a project forward, even if they don’t really in practice. Things like “writing a blog post” can be something to help generate more traffic as can posting to social media…but in reality, there are things you can do that will help to move something forward more like creating a book to sell or building more connections with other writers.
So now I’m trying to embrace doing and not thinking (too much). I have a rough plan (any plan is better than no plan) and I am going to do at least one thing each day that helps push a project forward. Part of that is continuing to develop for this site but I also have a couple of things in the background too.
Are you caught in paralysis by Analysis?
If there is something you’ve been trying to get going and it hasn’t seemed to shift, ask yourself if you have really been taking action, or have you just been “thinking”. What small steps could you take to move the needle forward.
