Welcome to another Monday Photo Pick. Yet again I got to pick the photographer and so I decided to go for someone who’s work I haven’t seen as much of but I find interesting, Alec Soth. Alec Soth is another Magnum photographer famed for his storytelling style in photography and often his images work in conjunction with each other. I wouldn’t really call him a street photographer, more of a photo journalist or storyteller but who really cares about definitions. He is a good photographer and that’s all that matters.
My Alec Soth Photo Pick
I choose this picture because I think it invites us into a story. The message on the wall tells us so much about some people who used to live here, it reminds me of child hood experiences of helping (how much help I actually gave) my dad change the wallpaper. It also shows a broken down place, which has seen better days, and the bag in the corner makes me wonder who is staying there at the moment. The shadows also add some extra depth to the image.
Of course, photos can tell lies and maybe the text was added for the photo, or the bag dropped down to add a more human element. Who can say, still I find it to be an interesting story.
